A Fulfilling and Meaningful Life: How Can a Positive Path Empower You?

All too often, we can lose sight of what we want most deeply from life. Packed schedules and other responsibilities fill our minds and crowd out space for deep reflection. Distractions scream at us from every corner.  But finding time to set big goals for what can make our life meaningful and fulfilling is ultimately so very worthwhile. One key element to keep in mind when doing this is the importance of choosing to be positive.  Far from being a cliché, choosing a positive path will lead to enormous dividends while you go through life. When you approach life from a positive place, you are empowered to build and maintain a life with deep meaning.

Improved Mental Health

Practicing positivity can be learned, like any other skill. For some people, this comes more naturally. But even if it’s not natural to you, you can still learn to reframe the way you think and respond.  When you can challenge a negative outlook, you’re teaching your brain a new way of interpreting reality. As you practice replacing unhealthy thoughts and attitudes about yourself and your situation with healthy ones, you empower yourself to handle all of life.

Dr. Susan David, wrote a book Emotional Agility, that explores how to navigate life’s twists and turns with self-acceptance, clear-sightedness, and an open mind.

Dr. David shares four key concepts:

  • Showing Up: Instead of ignoring difficult thoughts and emotions or overemphasizing ‘positive thinking,’ face into your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors willingly, with curiosity and kindness.
  • Stepping OutDetaching from, and observing your thoughts and emotions to see them for what they are—just thoughts, just emotions. Essentially, learning to see yourself as the chessboard, filled with possibilities, rather than as any one piece on the board, confined to certain preordained moves.
  • Walking Your WhyYour core values provide the compass that keeps you moving in the right direction. Rather than being abstract ideas, these values are the true path to willpower, resilience, and effectiveness.
  • Moving OnSmall deliberate tweaks to your mindset, motivation, and habits – in ways that are infused with your values, can make a powerful difference in your life. The idea is to find the balance between challenge and competence so that you’re neither complacent nor overwhelmed.  You’re excited, enthusiastic, invigorated.

Positivity is Attractive and More Fun

When you keep a positive outlook on life, you end up attracting other and ultimately having more fun. Rather than getting too stuck in negativity or on what you don’t have, being positive means that you can look for the good. You can find silver linings.  Likewise, when you maintain a happier attitude, you’ll often see more humor in life. Little and big things will strike you as funny. Keeping a sense of humor and being able to laugh at yourself boosts mental and physical health.

More Open

Similar to the benefit of having more fun, choosing to look for the positive in life means that you will be more open to life’s experiences. Rather than closing yourself off and shutting down, you now have the opportunity to learn something new.  New experiences stimulate our hippocampus, the brain center that produces the feel good hormones.  As you increase in wisdom, you’re also able to share this knowledge with others.

Improved Physical Health

Researchers and doctors have known for years that those who maintain a positive outlook on life typically have better overall health than those who are negative or pessimistic. The benefits carry over to recovery from illnesses and surgery.

Improved Relationships

For most people, close relationships are the cornerstone of a meaningful life. When we choose to keep a positive attitude toward those we love, we strengthen the health of the relationships. Staying positive about partners, friends, and children means that we can see the good in them. We look for solutions for problems that pop up, rather than getting caught in a negative spiral.

More Resiliency

Let’s face it; even the most positive person will face challenges and struggles. Resiliency is the ability to bounce back from hardship and setbacks. While it can be a struggle to find growth and meaning through trauma and unexpected difficulties, choosing to try to put positive attitudes into practice will support you in these times.

Live Your Best Life

No matter where you are in life or what your current general attitude is, it is possible to grow a more positive outlook. Choosing to follow a positive path as you journey through your experiences empowers you to live your absolute best life. You’ll reap so many good things: stronger mental and physical health, better relationships, and deeper fulfillment in life.
